Jesus Costazuela is a charming and romantic Spanish gentleman who, along with his brother Manolo,is a neighbor of Olive Madison and Florence Unger. Jesus is warm, flirtatious, and has a strong Spanish accent, which sometimes leads to humorous misunderstandings. He and his brother are invited over for a dinner date, which turns into a comedic disaster due to Florence’s emotional instability following her divorce.
Jesus, like Manolo, is kind-hearted and eager to comfort Florence, but their cultural differences and Florence’s dramatic personality make the situation hilariously awkward. His exaggerated politeness, mix of broken English and Spanish expressions, and passionate personality add to the comedic elements of the play.
Jesus was a lot of fun to play, in particular because of how emotional I found the character to be. I found Jesus to be very opinionated and empathetic, causing him to have a wide range of emotions. Playing along with Manolo was also very entertaining, as we were constantly finding new ways to interact with each other throughout rehearsals and performances.
