In Scott Sanford's play "Aging Bull", Ox Kowalski is Butte Kowalski's younger brother. He was recently released from prison after being incarcerated for four years for stealing an ice cream truck. Ox seeks out his brother so that he can be conditioned and trained to become a professional boxer.
Ox comes off as a lighthearted, naive individual who often lets his emotions get the best of him. He is not intelligent and often acts in a child-like manner. He is ambitious, driven and full of pride. Ox loves his brother, Butte, but is often reluctant to show it. He uses his relationship with his brother, along with the death of their mother, to coerce Butte to train him and book fights.
Ox serves as a good reminder that too much pride can lead to your downfall. However, he also shows that believing in yourself and having ambitions can help you achieve your dreams, like being the super duper mega heavyweight champion of the world.
Playing Ox allowed me to showcase a wide range of emotions, especially because he acted in such a reactive, child-like manner. Since Ox was recently released from jail, he also had the gritty edge of a thug in his blood. To me, he was the bully on the playground who never gets enough attention. There are moments where Ox shows his vulnerability with his brother, Butte, which adds a layer of humanity to the pridefully, hardened boxer. Since he never thinks things through, this left a lot of room for me to improv lines whenever possible to try to illicit a reaction from my scene partner. I loved playing Ox and being a part of the 'Aging Bull' production. It was such a unique play with so many talented actors, able to improv and bring so much life to the characters.
Johnny was a welcome addition to the cast of Aging Bull. He made the character his own and it became so much more than what was written on the page. His performance added depth and feeling that made the character of Ox Kowalski endearing. He also has stellar comedic timing and added many improvised bits that made the show better. I would work with Johnny again in a heartbeat.
